Information and Guidance for Groups
Volunteering Kirklees works with a wide range of voluntary organisations, community groups and other not-for-profit organisations. Our aim is to help you to recruit and retain volunteers. One of the best ways of doing this is to consider how you work with your volunteers. By ensuring that good practice is in place, your chances of keeping your volunteers and helping them to make a positive contribution to your group are enhanced.
You can review the following document to help you develop your organisation's policies:
Marketing Volunteering Opportunities
Volunteering Kirklees can assist groups to find volunteers by:
- Advertising opportunities with your organisation in our drop-in Volunteer Centre and via the Do-it website.
- Promoting your organisation through our outreach and promotional work in the community.
Volunteer Supervisors' Network
Managing volunteers is an extremely complicated role requiring skills similar to those of personnel / HR managers. In some ways the management of volunteers is more challenging, as volunteers tend to come from very diverse backgrounds and have a variety of motivations. Without the sanction of an employment contract or salary, volunteer managers must demonstrate a great deal of flexibility, understanding and empathy towards their volunteers.
The Volunteer Supervisors' Network meets 4 times per year. All meetings take place at VAK from 12.00 - 2.00pm. Dates for 2008 to be arranged.

Kirklees Compact Code of Practice on Volunteering
The Compact is the agreement between the local public sector bodies and the local community and voluntary sector organisations. It describes a way of working that will benefit all partners. It is similar to other Compacts that have been drawn up in other areas across England and the national one that central government will work to. This code of practice supports the Compact and gives more detail in regard to volunteering. It is one of two that have been adopted by the Local Strategic Partnership in Kirklees.
